One of the biggest flaws of most compund miter saws is that you often have to hunch and squint to clearly read the bevel and miter gauges. Hitachi has solved that problem by incorporating a digital LCD that accurately displays your angles. It?s clear, easy to read and placed perfectly right above the miter scale adjustment knob. Even better, just press the backlight button if you?re working in less-than-optimal light. Begging pardon of the purists who don?t want new-fangled doodads on their tools, we?d wager that anyone who uses this beauty with its digital display will never go back.We?re partial to a horizontal handle, and this one?s exceedingly nice to grasp because of a soft, comfortable grip. The table?s plenty big and offers great stock support, and the 5-1/8-inch fence and subfence design is superb, giving you super stability for cuts on crown molding. When bevel cutting, the subfence pivots neatly out of the way. And while some saws don?t include a clamp, this one does, and it can be mounted easily on either the left fence or the right.
Complementing the exactness of a digital readout, Hitachi?s built in a great fine adjustment option on the bevel set that allows you to make minute changes without losing your initial angle. A knob on the bevel clamp lever rotates to give you the ability to move just half a degree without starting over. Of course, the bevel will set from 0 to 52 degrees both right and left for a complete range of cuts.
As we expected, the C12LC cuts like a champ, whether through a delicate quarter-round or a hefty slab of oak, thanks to a 15-amp motor and Hitachi engineering.
